AMY GOODMAN: In a little bit, I want to ask you about how taking all this medication- being so heavily medicated, especially for young person- affects their development. But I want to go to the point you just raised about the destruction of American childhood. What do you mean by that?

DR. GABOR MATČ: The conditions in which children develop have been so corrupted and troubled over the last several decades that the template for normal brain development is no longer present for many, many kids. And Dr. Bessel Vanderkolk- who is a Professor of Psychiatry at Boston University in Boston- he actually says that the neglect or abuse of children is the number one public health concerning the United States. A recent study coming out of Notre Dame by a psychologist there has shown that the conditions for child development that hunter-gatherer societies provided for their children- which are the optimal conditions for development- and are no longer present for our kids. She said, actually, that the way we raise our children today in this country is increasingly depriving them of practices that lead to well-being in the moral sense. What is really going on here now is that the development of conditions for healthy childhood- psychological and brain development- are less and less available. So that the issue of ADD is only small part of the general issue: children are no longer having the support for the way they need to develop.

Over the past two weeks we looked at the Glycemic Index (GI) and its importance in regulating our ‘fuel supply’. Understanding its role in doing this is especially important for people who are faced with the symptoms of ADD/ADHD. This is because the maintenance of stable blood sugar levels is one of the key factors in controlling the inattention, impulsiveness and mood swings that so often go hand in glove with ADD/ADHD.

This week we will go one step further by taking some of the theory and putting it into practice. We will specifically look into the GI content of different foods. This should help you a great deal in terms of designing your diet to be as ADD/ADHD unfriendly as possible.

Just a short word of warning before we look at individual food types: It should be clear from last week’s article that the whole GI concept is based on solid scientific fact and that it is possible to determine the GI values of food with remarkable accuracy. However, the scientific nature of the Low GI approach was tarnished in the eyes of many by the fact that some unscrupulous people decided to market the concept as part of the latest ‘miracle diet’. Please be aware that what we are describing here does not fit into this category at all. Fad diets come and go and they usually involve going overboard with some important principle (like GI). We are recommending the exact opposite, namely learning about GI and its benefits for tackling ADD/ADHD and then applying what you have learned in a balanced and responsible way.

Having some general information about the Glycemic Index can be quite beneficial, this would however be close to worthless if you do not allow that knowledge to influence your food buying decisions. To recap, we saw last week that the Glycemic Index can be divided into three categories:

1 – 55: Low Glycemic Index

55 – 70: Medium/Intermediate Glycemic Index

70 – 99: High Glycemic Index

Putting the principles behind the GI concept into practice will obviously means that you need to orient your food choices very much towards the first two categories (i.e. Low GI and Medium GI). Some of the foods in the different categories will be listed below. It is obviously not an exhaustive list but it should give you a very good idea of the GI values of different kinds of foods.

Low GI Foods

Bran based cereals, porridge, natural muesli, wheat pasta shapes, new potatoes, brown rice, buckwheat, white long grain rice, wheat tortillas, soya bread, linseed bread, whole wheat bread, sourdough rye bread, muesli bars, milk chocolate (high fat), hummus, peanuts, walnuts, cashew nuts, raisins, oatmeal crackers, kidney beans, butter beans, chick peas, green and red lentils, black eyed beans, green peas, sweet corn, carrots, eggplant, broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage, tomatoes, chillies, lettuce, green beans, red peppers, onions, cherries, plums, grapefruit, peaches, apples, pears, apricots, grapes, coconut, kiwi fruit, oranges, strawberries, prunes, whole milk, skimmed milk, yoghurt, custard, soy milk

Medium GI Foods

Nutrigrain, porridge oats, shredded wheat, basmati rice, couscous, cornmeal, gnocchi, baked potatoes, wild rice, croissants, hamburgers buns, white pita, wholemeal rye bread, Ryvita, digestive biscuits, blueberry muffins, honey, beans in tomato sauce, beetroot, sultanas, bananas, raisins, papaya, figs, pineapple, ice cream

High GI Foods

Cornflakes, Coco Pops, Rice Crispies, instant white rice, short grain white rice, fresh mashed potatoes, French fries, white bread, bagels, baguettes, pretzels, water biscuits, rice cakes, crispbread, donuts, scones, pumpkin, parsnips, watermelon, dates

Two things should be immediately apparent from the foods listed above:

1) Low GI values can be found across a wide spectrum of foods. It is therefore very wrong to immediately assume that you will have to eat like a medieval monk in order to follow a Low GI diet! In fact, with a bit of careful planning and some creativity you should be able to create an eating plan that is not too far removed from what you are already eating. The only difference being that you will now be eating in a way that will keep your blood sugar levels much more stable.

2) GI values can sometimes seem slightly counterintuitive. The Glycemic Index can be very good at throwing up surprises. For example: Who would have thought that very ‘wholesome’ vegetables like pumpkin and parsnips would achieve such high scores? At the other end of the spectrum we also see ice cream and chocolate at places where we would not expect them (Medium GI and Low GI respectively). This clearly shows that you will have to follow the best possible professional advice when trying to follow a Low GI diet. Get yourself a book with detailed listings of the GI values of different foods and/or check back regularly to 3StepsADD for the latest news on GI related research.

Trying to follow a Low GI diet may seem like a bit of unnecessary hassle that you can easily do without. However research has shown time and again that it can be one of the most effective tools in combating the effects of ADD/ADHD. When you realise this, the effort and expense starts to pale into insignificance when compared to what the pharmaceutical companies would like you to do in response to ADD/ADHD!

*This is an awesome focus tool

Attention, concentration, focus, flow… These are words associated with mental states that assist in doing work. If we can focus our attention, we might be able to concentrate long enough to reach flow state, and actually get some work done. In this stimulation-rich world, focusing attention and finding flow is more easily discussed than done, but scientific understanding of attentional processes can simplify the challenge.
Our senses are constantly inundated with information: the light streaming in the windows, the sight of people passing by on the street, the smells of a cafe, the sounds of conversations and dogs barking over the din of city traffic, the light scrape of oxford cloth around your neck, the pressure of the hardwood table on your elbows. Each time you notice something in your environment, you are paying attention to it. The ability to focus your attention on something while ignoring competing stimuli is called selective attention by psychologists, and we would never get anything done without it. Can you imagine how distracting it would be to notice every little detail in your environment at all times?
Selective attention has been likened to a spotlight that you focus on something, and like a spotlight, the beam can be wide or narrow. Right now, your spotlight is focused on this article, which means that it is probably rather narrow. Other aspects of your environment fade into the background in relation to what is in your attentional spotlight. Until, something distracting happens in your environment, and refocuses your spotlight.

AMY GOODMAN: New figures show the number of U.S. children diagnosed with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder–ADHD–has grown 22% since 2003. Earlier this month, the Center for Disease Control reported that one in ten children now have ADHD, an increase of one million since 2003. The spike in diagnoses of ADHD and other mental disorders has fueled an unprecedented reliance on pharmaceutical medications to treat children, with long-term effects that remain unknown. The conventional response has also emphasized coercive methods with parents and schools encouraged to focus on regulating children’s behavior.

Well, the Canadian physician and bestselling author Dr. Gabor Maté argues that these responses are treating surface symptoms as causes while ignoring deeper roots. Whether it’s in mental disorders like ADHD or in rampant instances of bullying Dr. Maté says, “Children are, in fact, reacting to the broader collapse of the nurturing conditions needed for their healthy development.” Instead of focusing on regulating children’s behavior, Dr. Mate argues that we should be look at how those nurturing conditions can be improved. Dr. Gabor Maté the author of four books including Scattered: How Attention Deficit Disorder Originates and What You Can Do About It and, with Dr. Gordon Neufeld, Hold On To Your Kids: Why Parents Need To Matter More Than Peers. Earlier this year, he appeared on Democracy Now! to discuss his work on drug addiction, as well as on the mind-body connection, the role of emotions and stresses in the development of chronic illnesses. Dr. Maté recently returned to our studio to talk about ADHD, parenting, bullying, the education system, and how a litany of stresses on the family environment is impacting American children.

DR. GABOR MATČ : In the United States right now there are three million children receiving stimulant drugs for ADHD.

AMY GOODMAN: And ADHD means?

DR. GABOR MATČ : Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder. There are about half a million kids in this country receiving heavy duty anti-psychotic medications. Medications such as those are usually given to adult schizophrenics to regulate their hallucinations. But in this case, children are getting it to control their behavior. So what we have is a massive social experiment of the chemical control of kids’ behavior with no idea of the long-term consequences of these heavy duty anti-psychotics on kids.

I know that Canadians statistics just last week showed that within last five years, 43% increase in the rate of dispensing stimulant prescriptions for ADD or ADHD, and most are going to boys. In other words, what we are seeing is an unprecedented burgeoning of the diagnosis. I should say, really I’m talking about- more broadly speaking- what I would call the destruction of American childhood, because ADD is the template, or just an example of what’s going on. In fact, according to a recent study published in the States, nearly half of American adolescents now meet some criteria for mental-health disorders. So we’re talking about a massive impact on our children of something in our culture not been recognized.

AMY GOODMAN: Explain exactly what attention deficit disorder is, and what attention deficit hyperactivity disorder is.

DR. GABOR MATČ: Specifically ADD is a compound of three categories called, um, a set of symptoms. One has to do with poor impulse control. So, these children have difficulty controlling their impulses. When their brains tells them to do something, from the lower brain centers, there is nothing up here in the cortex- which is where the executive functions are, which is where the functions are that are supposed to tell us what to do and what not to do. Those circuits just don’t work. So there is poor impulse control- they act out, they behave aggressively, they speak out of turn, they say the wrong thing. Adults with ADD with shop compulsively – or impulsively, I should say. And again, behave in an impulsive fashion. So: poor impulse control.

But again, please notice that the impulse control problem is general amongst kids these days. In other words, it’s not just the kids diagnosed with ADD, but a lot of kids. And there are a whole lot of new diagnoses now. And children are being diagnosed with a lot of things- ADD is just one example. There is a new diagnosed called Oppositional Defiant Disorder which again has to do with behaviors and poor impulse control. So that impulse control has become a problem now amongst children in general, not just the specifically diagnosed with ADD. The second criteria for ADD is physical hyperactivity. So the part of the brain, again, that is supposed to regulate physical activity and keep you still just, again, does not work. And then finally, the third criteria is poor attention skills. Tuning out, not paying attention, mind being somewhere else, absent mindedness, and not being able to focus. Beginning to work on something and five minutes later the mind goes somewhere else. Kind of a mental restlessness, a lack of being still, lack of being focused, and a lack of being present. These are the three major criteria of ADD.

When in Doubt, Blame the Parents: Do Parents Cause ADHD?–UPDATED – Patheos (blog)

There’s an article circulating from Psychology Today about Why French Kids Don’t have ADHD by Marilyn Wedge, Ph.D. With a few exceptions, the “share” comes with a comment like “Americans always want the quick fix” or “Parents should learn to say no.” I agree with both of those statements in general. The problem is that neither of them really follow from the evidence presented in the article.

Dr. Wedge asks the question:

“Is ADHD a biological-neurological disorder? Surprisingly, the answer to this question depends on whether you live in France or in the United States.”

In case you didn’t catch that–the author did not provide an answer. She then goes on to detail the way ADHD is treated in America and in France, with a pretty firm bias on the French method that goes hand in hand with the current fashion for all things French. See also: Why French Women Don’t Get Fat, Bringing up Bebe, and Why the French are Superior to Americans in Every Way.

“To the extent that French clinicians are successful at finding and repairing what has gone awry in the child’s social context, fewer children qualify for the ADHD diagnosis. Moreover, the definition of ADHD is not as broad as in the American system, which, in my view, tends to “pathologize” much of what is normal childhood behavior.”

Wedge admits here that the criteria for diagnosing ADHD is much broader in America, which is an indictment of the current medical practice and the DSM-3 (the system of classification of childhood emotional problems that most American psychiatrists use).

So I’m not sure why she makes the next leap that she does, which is to provide a hyper-generalized picture of the way Americans parent that places blame for the ADHD diagnosis on parental sins ranging from offering their kids snacks to not letting their babies cry it out at night.

I cannot help feeling like this is a case of, “When in doubt, blame the parents,” which is, of course, the easy way out (since the monolithic group of parents-who-do-everything-wrong is beyond the reach of reasonable treatment). It also provides a critical platform for people who are annoyed by children in general, and even more so, by sloppy parenting.

Of course Wedge doesn’t provide solid evidence that sloppy parenting really does cause ADHD– just a few anecdotes about how different cultures parent, and their concurrent rates of ADHD diagnosis (Correlation is not causality).

I understand that the world is under no obligation to make me feel more secure in my parenting choices, but if one has never wandered through the cloud of guilt, worry and self-doubt that comes with recognizing that your child –who is so smart, so talented, so funny, and so lovable–cannot succeed at tasks that seem relatively simple for other children, then general prescriptions for how to solve his problems just don’t help that much and are the intellectual parallel of the illusary parents who are dying to medicate their kids.

The decision to use medicine to treat ADHD is not one most parents take lightly. No one wants to “feminize their boys” or turn their child into a submissive zombie, as the popular narrative goes.

Let’s give parents the benefit of the doubt.

Parental guilt is strong enough when our children don’t have learning or behavioral problems. But when they do, we feel the eyes anytime our child acts weird in public, we hear the whispers, we sense the rush to put away the breakables because that kid is coming over, and that’s not even touching on the pressures that come in from teachers (“His homework? Yes, I watched him do it, but I have no idea what happened to it between home and school.”).

Perhaps one thing the French really do better than Americans is tolerate “normal childhood behavior.”

And if Doctor Wedge would like to work on reforming the way the medical community diagnoses and treats ADHD in America, I would thoroughly welcome her innovations.

UPDATE:

* Elizabeth Scalia appreciates the way French parents set limits for their children. I absolutely agree that the parenting style presented in the article is very good, and one I strive to practice. See here, I am the queen of “no.” My only caveat would be that the ADHD child typically doesn’t respond to these methods, nor any method, for that matter. He’s thinking about something else. Always.

*For those who would like to say “Back in my day, no one had this new fangled ADD,” my response is that if you knew someone who always got in trouble in grade school, flunked out of college, couldn’t keep a job, and keeps asking you for money so that he can self-medicate, you probably knew someone with ADD. The difference between today and yester-year is that there are treatments that may prevent this child from becoming the eternal ne’er-do-well.

Can something as ‘simple’ as proper nutrition really make a difference in the life of a person struggling with ADD/ADHD? I am convinced that the answer to this question is a resounding ‘Yes!’

I am particularly convinced of the fact that a Low-GI diet can be a force for good in terms of building higher levels concentration and better emotional health. It is also becoming clear that it can act as a very effective tool in the struggle against the conditions that lead to the irrational impulsiveness and mood swings that are, sadly, often associated with ADD/ADHD.

Over the next few weeks we will ‘unpack’ some of the research that have been done to explore the links between the Glycemic Index (GI) and behavior, concentration and hyperactivity. The things that we will discover will shock, amaze and anger you! This is because drug companies, as well as ‘Big Food’, are trying their best to keep this link secret and to convince us that it should just be ‘business as usual’ in terms of what we put on our plates.

To this attitude we have to say: Enough is enough! Enough of diets devoid of the things that we need the most. Enough of drugging our kids into submission when they respond negatively to the ‘Frankenfoods’ that are such a seemingly normal part of everyday life.

Be prepared to discover some amazing truths about ADD/ADHD over the next few weeks. Before we delve a little deeper however, it would perhaps be good to just briefly discuss some of the theory behind the Clycemic Index (GI). This will make it very clear why it is so important if to come to grips with ‘GI issues’ if we really want to understand optimum human nutrition.

What is the Glycemic Index?

The simplest definition of the Glycemic Index is that it is a ranking system (scaled from 1 -100) that measures the extent to which specific carbohydrates raise the blood sugar level after it is eaten. If a specific food scores high on the GI Index it means that it is normally digested very quickly, leading to strong fluctuations in blood sugar levels. Low GI foods are, by contrast, digested slowly. This leads to gradual absorption of nutrients and gradual rises in insulin and blood sugar levels.

Making Low GI foods a cornerstone of your diet can make a marked difference to your life. Some of the main benefits of a Low GI diet include the following:

Improved Weight Management: Low GI foods can help you to avoid the ‘feast – famine’ cycle that is often associated with weight gain. Since Low GI nutrients are released slowly it provides constant energy, thus delaying the onset of the hunger reflex.

Improved General Health: Study after study have confirmed the linkage between High GI diets and serious health problems like heart disease, ‘Type 2’ Diabetes and obesity. This has led to the World Health Organization (WHO) officially recommending a Low GI diet as one of the best ways to prevent the abovementioned ‘diseases of affluence’.

Improved Emotional Health: Most parents are probably all too familiar with the effects of ‘sugar spikes’ where kids seem to bouncing of the walls after eating too much sugar…only to become grumpy and lethargic the next moment! This effect is not only linked to ingesting ‘pure sugar’ but also to easily-digested High GI foods. A Low GI diet, with its more measured release of nutrients, can therefore be one of the best ways to manage food-induced mood swings.

Improved Management of the symptoms of ADD/ADHD: It is becoming clearer that good nutrition is one of the secrets of the proper management of ADD/ADHD. It is therefore exciting to realize that one of the lesser known advantages of a Low-GI diet is the effect that it can have on people who are presenting some of the symptoms of ADD/ADHD. The reasons why this is the case, and how you can use this fact to your advantage, will be the subject of the articles the will follow over the next few weeks. Be sure to check back regularly. What you will find will astound you. It also has the potential to radically change your life for the better.

‘You are what you eat!’ or so the old saying goes. People all over the world are increasingly finding that ancient wisdom was spot-on in this instance. Effectively addressing some of the most common modern health epidemics can, in many cases, simply be a matter of paying close attention to what you put into your body. This is especially true in the case of ADD/ADHD. I therefore encourage you to come back next week as we continue to explore the links between a Low GI diet and good emotional and psychological health.
