I created this for teachers to help understand their ADD ADHD students a little better.

I have included several proven strategies along with tips and tricks that can make the classroom a more positive learning environment.

One thing is sure…

ADD ADHD kids do not follow the same ol’ sit-still and listen to lectures all day.

As teachers, we must adapt and accept the fact that not everyone learns in the same manner.

If we ignore this fact, we are trying to fit squares into round holes, spinning our wheels…

This is NOT an exhaustive guide.

Many teachers may have already implemented some of the tactics inside, but I am sure there is something of value for EVERY teacher inside this 71 page guide.

I am giving this guide away free because I truly want to help in any way I can.

Teachers are on the “front lines” of the ADD ADHD epidemic.

They have the insane responsibility to trying to be effective in a very “broken” education system (more on
this later)

Please share this link with any teacher you know.

To access the “ADHD Teacher’s Guide” simply

Go Here and leave a comment.

Have an awesome day!

Introduction
I am often asked by parents and teachers about the best techniques and methods for an ‘ADD/ADHD Friendly’ education. This book is my answer!

The principles that I will be sharing will draw upon years of experience of dealing with parents and children that are coping with ADD/ADHD and will work in many different circumstances. They can be applied to classrooms, homeschooling situations and to the general home environment.

Although this is not an exhaustive guide, it will certainly give you a great start! The principles that I will be sharing have been tried and tested in classrooms all across North America and confirm a single truth: ADD/ADHD can be effectively managed in an educational context.

This can be done through the application of a few basic principles and a great deal of openness towards the needs of individual children. I trust that you will eventually be one of the educators whose classrooms will be transformed through your efforts to provide a genuinely ADD/ADHD friendly education.
Thank you for coming on this journey with me, I look forward to sharing my insights with you!

If you have been reading “3 Steps ADD” and/or the articles on this site you would have noticed that I place a great deal of emphasis on nutrition as a vitally important part of any strategy for dealing with the effects of ADD/ADHD.

You may also be aware that many people are quite critical of an ADD/ADHD strategy that majors on healthy eating supplemented by essential vitamins and oils. This may come as a surprise until you ask a few questions about the background and credentials of the critics.

It turns out that many of the people who have the most to say about the deficiencies of a nutrition based strategy have a vested interest in continuing the status quo (i.e. drugging people on a massive scale). I suppose that, on one level, you cannot blame them.

If you have successfully created a cash cow it is perhaps only natural that you will react with alarm when someone threatens its ability to inflate your profit statement.

We should note, however, that individuals and companies who perpetuate the wholesale profit driven medication of a significant part of an entire generation cannot be relied upon to provide the most accurate and objective information about how best to deal with ADD/ADHD.

I invite you, in light of the above, to ignore the naysayers and consider the very real benefits that a nutrition based strategy can deliver:

Nutrition based strategies allow you to experiment with less radical solutions. Doctors do not treat a slight pain in the arm by immediately opting for amputation. In the vast majority of cases they will arrive at an effective diagnosis and treatment without making use of radical measures.

It seems, however, that conventional wisdom is thrown out of the window when it comes to the treatment of ADD/ADHD. Here the ‘accepted’ method is to follow diagnosis with the most radical treatment possible: Huge doses of psycho-stimulant drugs.

Our approach is the exact opposite.

We recognize that ADD/ADHD is a multifaceted condition and that there are many different ways to address it. Starting off with a strategy based on sound nutritional principles is perhaps the least invasive way to address the issue and is often a large part of the solution.

Nutrition based strategies recognize the crucial links between the things we eat and brain function. ADD/ADHD can, in most cases, be traced directly to issues with brain function.

These problems are very often due to the absence of the building blocks needed to construct neurotransmitters (the chemicals that allow different parts of the nervous system to ‘talk to each other). Adding nutrients rich in these building blocks (e.g. essential oils, vitamins etc.) can make a huge difference in improving the symptoms of ADD/ADHD.

Managing the energy available to the brain is a key to combatting ADD/ADHD. The brain uses a disproportionate amount of energy when compared to other parts of the body (it makes up about 3% of body weight but uses about 20% of the energy!). Nutritional strategies, especially those centered on Low-GI foods, can ensure that the brain is sufficiently ‘powered up’ to fulfill its vital functions.

Nutrition based strategies are much less risky than the alternatives. Perhaps the single most important benefit of a nutrition based strategy is the fact that you address the symptoms of ADD/ADHD in a natural way.

Medicating ADD/ADHD with stimulants comes with all kinds of strings attached. It is well documented that ADHD drugs can lead to addiction, affect motivation, stunt growth and lead to long term behavioral issues and even suicides.

All of these unwelcome side effects will obviously not happen to every person in every case, but the fact that their occurrence are associated with these drugs should, at the very least, prompt a long hard look at the need for them if they are prescribed.

Nutrition based strategies can help you to avoid the ‘medicalization’ of ADD/ADHD. An ADD/ADHD diagnosis is often viewed as a one-way ticket into the world of professional medicine. It will, in the vast majority of cases, be followed up by prescriptions, consultations and further examinations. In this way the ‘patient’ (as he/she will invariably be called) is subjected to a tiresome and unsettling merry-go-round presented as ‘treatment’.

The ironic outcome of all of this is that it places so much focus on the condition that it can lead the ‘patient’ to obsess about ADD/ADHD rather than getting on with the job of managing it and alleviating the symptoms. Following a nutrition based strategy avoids this merry-go-round (not to mention the massive costs associated with it) by providing ways in which the condition can be managed in natural and home-based ways.

It should be noted that something more than a strategy centered on good nutrition (and appropriate supplements) may be needed in some ADD/ADHD cases.

*It is my firm belief, however, that this will be a minority and that the “3 Steps” approach should first be tried before going for the ‘nuclear option’! *

I am also convinced that there are many other approaches (not involving medication) that can follow on from a nutrition based strategy. Bottom line: We need to get the basics right first and nutrition can play a crucial role in helping us to do just that!

A BOY crouches naked in a steel animal cage, with the downcast eyes of a prisoner.

This confronting image, meant to represent a ”chemical cage” of drugs to treat attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, is part of an exhibition called Ritalin by photographer Sean O’Carroll.

O’Carroll, a former teacher, said the exhibition expressed his concern about the widespread administering of what he called addictive mind-altering drugs to young boys, which was ”a catastrophic failure on the part of our society to deal with the challenge of raising active, energetic and ‘difficult’ boys”.

”It makes my stomach churn. I feel like it’s a dangerous abuse of their rights as human beings.” More:
The show, which opens in Melbourne in July, features seven boys, including O’Carroll’s sons Moses, 4, and Elijah, 3, as well as two nephews and the sons of friends.

One image from the exhibition is on display at Gaffa Gallery in Sydney alongside the photographer’s Boys, Guns, Etc? exhibition of near-naked photos of toddlers holding toy guns.

O’Carroll said the boys were ”very enthusiastic” about appearing in the photos. ”It’s the parent who needed lots of time and discussion and attention. The kids were like, ‘Oh, cool, I’m an animal in the cage,’ or ‘The baddies have caught me,”’ he told The Sun-Herald.

The Melbourne photographer said he had deliberately made the images confronting. ”In a sense I’m utilising the current hysteria around nudity to make my point about something far more dire.”

Figures from Medicare show that more than 57,000 children were on ADHD drugs, in 2009, including about 23,000 children from NSW.

O’Carroll’s strong views are shared by the West Australian Labor politician Martin Whitely, who describes Ritalin as a ”chemical cage” and has called for an end to federal government subsidising of Ritalin. ”Currently we’re subsidising misery,” he said.

Professor Jon Jureidini, head of the department of psychological medicine at Adelaide Women’s and Children’s Hospital, said there was increasing evidence of Ritalin’s long-term detrimental affects on the brain, particularly for children whose brains were in a ”state of flux”.

Yet Another Study Supports %223 Steps To Conquering ADD%22Yet Another Study Supports the teachings inside “3 Steps To Conquering ADD”…

Jon Bennett. Hello, Jon Bennett here with “3 Steps to Conquering ADD-ADHD”. Today I’m sharing a brand new study that just came out from a doctor who posted her findings in the Lancet, which is a very prestigious medical journal.

I’m going to post the article and a link to some of the audio here on this blog post. But I just wanted to make the point that this is yet another study that confirms the teachings inside “3 Steps to Conquering ADD-ADHD”.

My book has been out for about eight years. It’s a worldwide best seller across the world. We continue to revise it. We’re working on the seventh edition right now. It’s going to be a big major overhaul. It probably won’t be out until later this year, but this is a current theme that happens.

I don’t know, at least, once a year a new study by a prominent researcher or doctor comes out and says, “Hey, we’re barking up the wrong tree with the drug first type of approach.” It’s interesting but most of the time these studies make no effect on how we handle ADD-ADHD, especially here in America where we are in a myriad of a medical spider web where everybody is looking out for the number one thing, which is profits.

You’ve got the drug companies, big drug companies, the insurance companies, and everything is locked into a system where it’s very difficult for anybody to actually conceive trying to use a natural approach before we just medicate right off the bat.

I’d like to play a little clip of the audio for you. Then I’ll wrap it up so here you go.

Man: Dutch researcher, Lidy Pelsser, says as many as two thirds of those kids may not need medicine at all. It’s a conclusion she recently published in the British medical journal, Lancet. Pelsser, who runs the ADHD research center in the Netherlands, argues that in many cases behaviors usually associated with ADHD can be controlled by changes in diet.

Lidy Pelsser: ADHD, it’s just a couple of symptoms. It’s not a disease. We should look for the cause of it. Like an eczema the skin is affected, but a lot of people get eczema because of a latex allergy or because they are eating a pineapple or strawberries.

I think there is a paradigm shift needed if a child is diagnosed ADHD. We should say, OK, we have got those symptoms. Now, let’s start looking for the cause.

Man: The majority of children who are diagnosed ADHD are given medication. But you believe that this research suggests that many of those children may not need it. They may simply need to alter their diets.

Lidy: Well, what we know now is that in 64 percent of children with ADHD, ADHD is caused by food. It’s a hypersensitivity reaction. So then, there is 36 percent left. In those children we could start research for dyslexia, for highly talented or, maybe, children who are not so talented but who have to do too much in school and just don’t manage it to do it.

They are getting distracted and they start fidgeting, too.

Jon: That’s just a short audio clip from the interview with NPR. I’ve got links to the entire study here on the blog post. But I just wanted to point out that this is not a new concept. There are similar studies dating much further back than my book or anything else. I’m just a messenger. I just want everyone to know that the first course of action does not have to be drugs.

Many people just make that mistake. They blindly follow their doctor’s advice. They think it’s truly a condition, a disease that requires medication, and that’s simply not true.

Enjoy the study, and I’ll see you soon.

GUY RAZ, host:

ADHD – or attention deficit hyperactivity disorder – is said to affect up to 10 percent of American children, and almost 3 million of those kids take medication to control it.

But Dutch researcher Lidy Pelsser says as many as two-thirds of those kids may not need medicine at all. It’s a conclusion she recently published in the British medical journal Lancet. And Pelsser, who runs the ADHD Research Centre in the Netherlands, argues that in many cases, behaviors usually associated with ADHD can be controlled by changes in diet.

Dr. LIDY PELSSER (ADHD Research Centre): ADHD, it’s just a couple of symptoms; it’s not a disease. We should look for the cause of it. Like in eczema, the skin is affected. But a lot of people get eczema because of a latex allergy, or because they are eating a pineapple or strawberries.

And I think there is a paradigm shift needed. If a child is diagnosed ADHD, we should say OK, we have got those symptoms; now, let’s start looking for the cause.

RAZ: The majority of children who are diagnosed ADHD are given medication, but you believe that this research suggests that many of those children may not need it, that they may simply need to alter their diets.

Dr. PELSSER: Well, what we know now is that in 64 percent of children with ADHD, ADHD is caused by food. It’s a hypersensitivity reaction to food. So then, there is 36 percent left. In those children, we could start – research for dyslexia, for highly talented, or maybe children who are not so talented and who have to do too much in school and just don’t manage to do it, and they are getting distracted, too, and they start fidgeting, too.

RAZ: Now, you’re not saying that some children with ADHD should not be given medication, right? I mean, you’re saying that even…

Dr. PELSSER: No.

RAZ: …with your research, some kids will still need medication.

Dr. PELSSER: Yes. I think in all children, we should start with a diet research. And if that is not successful, if behavior doesn’t – changes, well then we do need drugs. Of course, we do need them. But now, we are giving them all drugs, and I think that’s a huge mistake.

RAZ: Explain how you tested the children. What did you feed them, for example?

Dr. PELSSER: In fact, we started with a very elaborate diet. And after two weeks, we made an inventory of the problems. If the problems still were there, we started to restrict the diet until we came to that few food diet – with only rice, turkey, pear and lettuce – and water.

RAZ: And we can know – or you say that your research shows that it only takes about five weeks to determine whether…

Dr. PELSSER: Yes, five weeks of diet. Parents should not start a diet for a year or so. It’s only five weeks to find out whether diet is the cause.

RAZ: Right.

Dr. PELSSER: And if it isn’t, that child can have drugs, of course. And if it is the diet, then we start to find out which foods are causing the problems.

RAZ: Right. But how would a parent listening now go about trying this? I mean, what should they do? You know, should they go talk to the doctors?

Dr. PELSSER: Well, we have got the good news that food is the main cause of ADHD. We’ve got the bad news that we have to train physicians to monitor this procedure because it cannot be done by a physician who is not trained.

RAZ: Now, did you hear from any of the schoolteachers of these kids, or even the physicians who describe changes in behavior?

Dr. PELSSER: Well, in fact, they were flabbergasted. After the diet, they were just normal children with normal behavior. They were no more easily distracted. They were no more forgetful. There were no more temper tantrums. Some teachers saying that they never thought it would work – it was so strange that a diet would change the behavior of a child as thoroughly as they saw it. It was a miracle, a teacher said.

RAZ: That’s Lidy Pessler. She’s from the ADHD Research Center in Eindhoven, in the Netherlands. She led a study that links diet to ADHD. It was published in the latest issue of the journal Lancet.

Dr. Pessler, thank you so much.

Ms. PESSLER: I was glad to join you.
Official Summary of Study:

Background

The effects of a restricted elimination diet in children with attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) have mainly been investigated in selected subgroups of patients. We aimed to investigate whether there is a connection between diet and behaviour in an unselected group of children.

Methods

The Impact of Nutrition on Children with ADHD (INCA) study was a randomised controlled trial that consisted of an open-label phase with masked measurements followed by a double-blind crossover phase. Patients in the Netherlands and Belgium were enrolled via announcements in medical health centres and through media announcements. Randomisation in both phases was individually done by random sampling. In the open-label phase (first phase), children aged 4—8 years who were diagnosed with ADHD were randomly assigned to 5 weeks of a restricted elimination diet (diet group) or to instructions for a healthy diet (control group). Thereafter, the clinical responders (those with an improvement of at least 40% on the ADHD rating scale [ARS]) from the diet group proceeded with a 4-week double-blind crossover food challenge phase (second phase), in which high-IgG or low-IgG foods (classified on the basis of every child’s individual IgG blood test results) were added to the diet. During the first phase, only the assessing paediatrician was masked to group allocation.

During the second phase (challenge phase), all persons involved were masked to challenge allocation. Primary endpoints were the change in ARS score between baseline and the end of the first phase (masked paediatrician) and between the end of the first phase and the second phase (double-blind), and the abbreviated Conners’ scale (ACS) score (unmasked) between the same timepoints. Secondary endpoints included food-specific IgG levels at baseline related to the behaviour of the diet group responders after IgG-based food challenges. The primary analyses were intention to treat for the first phase and per protocol for the second phase. INCA is registered as an International Standard Randomised Controlled Trial, number ISRCTN 76063113.

Findings

Between Nov 4, 2008, and Sept 29, 2009, 100 children were enrolled and randomly assigned to the control group (n=50) or the diet group (n=50). Between baseline and the end of the first phase, the difference between the diet group and the control group in the mean ARS total score was 23·7 (95% CI 18·6—28·8; p<0·0001) according to the masked ratings. The difference between groups in the mean ACS score between the same timepoints was 11·8 (95% CI 9·2—14·5; p<0·0001). The ARS total score increased in clinical responders after the challenge by 20·8 (95% CI 14·3—27·3; p<0·0001) and the ACS score increased by 11·6 (7·7—15·4; p<0·0001). In the challenge phase, after challenges with either high-IgG or low-IgG foods, relapse of ADHD symptoms occurred in 19 of 30 (63%) children, independent of the IgG blood levels. There were no harms or adverse events reported in both phases.

Interpretation

A strictly supervised restricted elimination diet is a valuable instrument to assess whether ADHD is induced by food. The prescription of diets on the basis of IgG blood tests should be discouraged.

He is a really smart dude and has some awesome knowledge to drop on you!

Lyrics Below

ATTENTION: All you rule-breakers, you misfits and troublemakers – all you free spirits and pioneers – all you visionaries and non-conformists …

Everything that the establishment has told you is wrong with you
– is more likely what’s right with you.

You see things others don’t. You are hardwired to change the world. Unlike 9 out of 10 people – your mind is irrepressable – and this threatens authority. You were born to be a revolutionary.

You can’t stand rules because in your heart you know there’s a better way.

You have strengths dangerous to the establishment – and it wants them eliminated, So your whole life you’ve been told your strengths were weaknesses – Now I’m telling you otherwise.

Your impulsivity is a gift – impulses are your key to the miraculous,
Your distractibility – is an artifact of your inspired creativity,
Your mood swings – reflect the natural pulse of life, they give you unstoppable energy when you’re high and deep soulful insight when you’re low,
Been diagnosed with a “disorder”? That’s society’s latest way to deny it’s own illness by pointing the finger at you. Your addictive personality is just a symptom of your vast underused capacity for heroic, creative expression and spiritual connection. your utter lack of repression, your wide eyed idealism, your unmitigated open mind – didn’t anyone ever tell you?! these are the traits shared by the greatest pioneers and visionaries and innovators, revolutionaries, procrastinators and drama queens, activists on the social scene, space cadets and mavericks, philosophers and derelicts, business suits flying fighter jets, football stars and sex addicts, celebrities with ADD, alcoholics who seek novelty, first responders – prophets and saints, mystics and change agents.

We are – all – the same – you know
‘cuz we’re all affected by the way -
We are – all – the same – you know
‘cuz we’re all attracted to the flame -

You know in your heart that there’s a natural order to life,
something more sovereign than any man-made rules or laws could ever express.

This natural order is called “the Way.”

The Way is the eternal substrate of the cosmos. It guides the very current of time and space. The Way is known by some as the Will of God, Divine Providence, the Holy Spirit, the implicate order, the Tao, reverse-entropy, life-force, but for now we’ll simply call it “the Way.” The Way is reflected in you as the source of your inspiration, the source of your passions, your wisdom, your enthusiasm, your intuition, your spiritual fire – love. The Way takes the chaos out of the Universe and breathes life into it by reflecting divine order. The Way, when experienced by the mind, is genius, when perceived through the eyes is beauty, when felt with the senses is grace, when allowed into the heart … is love.

Most people cannot sense the Way directly. … But then there are the Wayseers. The keepers of the flame. Wayseers have an unexplainable knack for just knowing the Way. They sense it in their very being. They can’t tell you why or how they arrived at the right answer. They just know it in their core. They can’t show their work. So don’t ask. Their minds simply resonate with the Way. When the Way is present, so are they.

While others are blind to it, and society begs you to ignore it, “the Way” stirs you inside. Neurological repression blocks most people’s awareness of the Way – censoring all thoughts and impulses from the unconscious is their prefrontal cortex – the gestapo of the brain – nothing which violates its socialized programming even gets through; but your mind is different. your mind has been cracked wide open to the Way – by some miraculous genetic trait, some psychotropic chemical or maybe even by the will of your very soul, your brain’s reward pathways have been hijacked – dopamine employed to overthrow the fascist dictatorship of your prefrontal cortex – now your brain is free of repression, your mind free of censorship, your awareness exposed to the turbulent seas of the unconscious – through this open doorway divine light shines into your consciousness showing you the Way. This is what makes you a Wayseer.

90% of human civilization is populated with those who’s brains are blocked to the Way. Their brains are hardwired to enforce the social programming indoctrinated since birth. Unlike you they cannot break out of this programming, because they have not yet experienced the necessary revolution of mind. These programmed people take social institutions and rules very seriously. Society is full of games programmed to keep peoples’ minds occupied so they will not revolt. These games often cause sick fixations on peculiar protocols, power structures, taboos and domination – all subtle forms of human bondage – This distinct form of madness is not only tolerated by the masses but insisted upon. The programmed ones believe in rules so forcefully they become willing to destroy anyone who violates them.

Wayseers are the ones who call their bluff. Since Wayseer minds are free to reject social programming, Wayseers readily see social institutions for what they are – imaginary games. Wayseers comfort the disturbed and disturb the comfortable. Helping those who are lost in these games and refuse to help themselves is a calling of many Wayseers. Since Wayseers are the ones who keep contact with the original source of reality – they are able to disrupt societal conventions and even governments to realign humanity with the Way.

The Wayseers are an ancient lineage. A kind of priesthood – carriers of the flame – ones “in the know.” There must always be Wayseers to reform the dizzying psychotic spinning gears of society – giant mindless hamster wheels obscuring the pure blue sky, keeping humanity shackled in a darkened cage – so Wayseers are called – to shed light on the madness of society – to continually resurrect the timeless transcendent Spirit of Truth -

Wayseers reveal this divine truth by devoting themselves to the birth of some creative or disruptive act expressed through art or philosophy, innovations to shake up industry, revolutions for democracy, coups that topple hypocrisy, movements of solidarity, changes that leave a legacy, rebellions against policy, spirit infused technology, moments of clarity, things that challenge barbarity, watersheds of sincerity, momentous drives for charity
We are – all – the same – you know
‘cuz we’re all affected by the way -
We are – all – the same – you know
‘cuz we’re all attracted to the flame -

This is your calling, Wayseer.
You’ve found your tribe.
Welcome home.
