Working Protein into “Snacks”

“3 Steps” is all about choices.

When it comes to snacking, we have to become smarter.

Many of us don’t think twice about what we are eating as snacks.

I shot this video on my iphone.

It features my 3 year old daughter Mackenzie.

She is talking about one of her favorite snacks…

Wheat Thins with cheese and turkey.

Its subtle, but think about it.

You could have chosen potatoe chips.  Which means saturated fat and no nutritional value.

By adding the turkey to the snack we are “sneaking” in protein.

Once again, its all about choices.

Dr. Bennet, I have just started the supplements you recommended to my son, 7yrs old. I am reviewing your diet recommendations, and I am wondering if I should restrict yogurt from his diet and well as oatmeal. He has oatmeal regularly for breakfast and snacks on yogurt frequently.

    Thank you,

Yogurt and oatmeal are GREAT! I would suggest the “low sugar” versions of each. There are some yogurts and oatmeals that are LOADED with sugar. I would avoid. those

Be sure and avoid the low sugar ones that are artificially sweetened. Instead, use plain yogurt and mix in a couple spoonfuls of the regular flavored ones to reduce the sugar while still providing some flavor. Or you can make your own flavored kind by adding a little frozen fruit to the plain yogurt. You can also add a spoonful of xylitol (from USA birch trees, not corn from China) to sweeten it.
Use the regular plain rolled oats, not the quick oats as they have a higher glycemic index. If your child isn’t allergic to milk, cook them in milk, add a little vanilla protein powder, cinnamon, chopped nuts, and a some xylitol. You can also chop some apples and cook them in the oatmeal. Don’t buy the pre-flavored quick oats packages, they have way too much sugar. You can make your own packets by putting all the dry ingredients in a ziplock sandwich bag, you can even use powdered milk – then all you need to add is water and microwave in a bowl. Again, stay away from the artificially sweetened ones.
